The 4 Ways I Make My Baby's Room DARK for Naps
All the baby sleep pros will tell you that it’s really important to make sure the baby’s room is dark dark dark to allow the best nap environment possible. This is how I’ve done it for both my babies: with these 4 items!
1. Black-Out Curtains (duh)
Yes, black out curtains are integral. You also have to make sure you do floor-to-ceiling length! This might mean you have to move your curtain rods up. For standard 8 foot ceilings, you will need curtains in 96” length. Having full length curtains ensures the least amount of light streaming out from the bottom or top of the curtains. I have loved these for Wyatt’s room (tons of colors and designs) and these for Willa’s room (19 different colors).
(I don’t have the floor to ceiling length in Willa’s room because her room is in an already-dark side of the house).
2. Black Out Shades
We have blinds on all our windows but these black out shades add another layer of light blocking between the blinds and the black out curtains. If you have to trim them for length, make sure you trim them at floor length and no shorter.
3. Velcro
You also don’t want any light shining out the sides of the curtains. I stick pieces of velcro (these are already cut for you) along the window and place those pieces with the other side of the Velcro at the matching location inside of the curtains. I can pull the curtain off the velcro to let the sun in the room and re-apply for each nap whenever I want to.
4. Door Draft Stoppers
Sure, they stop a draft but in this case these door draft stoppers are used to stop light from coming in through the bottom of the bedroom door. Get the black ones even if your doors are white. I bought the white because my doors are white but I would recommend the black regardless of the color of your doors.
