Our 24 Hour Staycation in Mount Pleasant

My husband and I did a staycation in Mount Pleasant this past weekend. This is my honest review of The Cabana Bar at Water’s Edge, the Post House Inn where we stayed for the night, the bar at the Post House, and Gala Desserts.

We started with happy hour — food and drinks — at the Cabana Bar at Water’s Edge on Shem Creek

Water’s Edge is generally considered a more upscale restaurant on Shem Creek, but their Cabana Bar down by the water is much more low-key and offers happy hour specials, Monday through Friday from 4-7PM, plus a full menu, different from their main restaurant.

We ordered the buffalo chicken tenders, onion rings, and TJ got a couple beers and liquor drinks off the happy hour menu. I ordered two tasty cocktails off their cocktail menu, a caprese salad, and TJ ordered a fried mahi sandwich off their full Cabana Bar menu. They were out of the “pig wings” from the happy hour menu, which TJ was a little bummed about.

We really enjoyed everything! The Cabana Bar was lively and busy for a Thursday night and we were blessed with fantasic fall weather.

After we finished, we walked down the boardwalk along Shem Creek and enjoyed the tail end of the sunset.

A note about parking: if you are not able to find parking in the free spots by Water’s Edge, they will validate your parking. Just bring your ticket to the hostess stand.

Next, we checked into the Post House Inn in Old Village.

In our search for a hotel for a one-night staycation on a Thursday in November, we found that hotels downtown were still very expensive ($500+/night) and even the two beach resort-style hotels in Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms were pricey. Not that the Post House Inn was cheap ($340 for the night), it was a bit lower than the others, and I had been wanting to check it out anyway, so it worked out perfectly. We snagged their last available room!

The room was clean, trendy, stylish, and romantic.

We were greeted by a lovely hand-written note from the Inn, and a complimentary bottle of wine and note from our travel advisor that helped us book the room. Thank you, Jenni!

We settled into our room and then made our way downstairs to the bar

with our drink tickets from the Inn in hand 🍸 Such a nice touch!

The bar is dimly lit, with a speakeasy vibe. The bartenders are true mixologists. Our bartender made me a lemon drop martini with a twist (some kind of vanilla liqueur added in, and it was delicious), while TJ enjoyed a Whiskey Pig on the rocks.

We ordered the buttermilk pie and oatmeal raisin cookie off the dessert menu. I preferred the buttermilk pie but they were both delectable.

Our overnight stay was very nice!

but here are a couple things to note:

The Inn is a very old building, therefore it doesn’t have the same soundproofing that a modern hotel will have. I did hear some noise around 7am, probably from the start of breakfast service. It was not terribly disruptive and thankfully that was all the noise I heard overnight and into the morning, but worth noting.

Also, there are only blinds on the windows, and no curtains. This made for a bright morning ☀️ You may want to consider bringing a sleep mask.

The continental breakfast was phenomenal. I am still thinking about it! Do not skip it!

All in all, I highly recommend checking out The Post House Inn for an overnight stay, the Post House Bar for a cocktail, and/or the restaurant for any meal! (lunch, dinner, or brunch). We checked out the next day feeling very pleased and looking forward to another future stay.

After checking out of the Inn, we bee-bopped over to Gala Desserts next door

I hadn’t been since they opened and I wanted to grab another light bite and an iced coffee.

Sadly, the brownie did not excite me, nor did the iced latte. But there were many other pastries and desserts that looked tantalizing and I would love to do some work from their front porch some time, so I will be back.


We finished off our little staycation with a cruise around the creek and the harbor on our John boat. We were left feeling refreshed and grateful for this little town we get to call home.
