My 9 Favorite Self Development Books & Podcasts of 2018
I have a pretty strange range of books I like to read. I’ve read the same two kinds of books for years now: self development and books based in Charleston. I know, kind of ridiculous. And actually in 2018 I read only self development books (maybe I need to get a life?), but if you want any recommendations on books based in Charleston, I can send some your way.
Anyway, much of my business and personal growth in 2018 is probably thanks to much of this reading below. After my last blog post a few of you asked what my favorites were, so I thought I’d compile my favorites from this past year for you. There are 2 podcasts in this list, too!
You Are a Badass - by Jen Sincero
This was my favorite of the year!! It was very lighthearted and playful, but also very motivational and empowering. It was a real page turner for me. I think I finished it in like 3 days. It’s generally about creating the life you want and a life you love. I actually might start reading this one again.
You Are A Badass At Making Money - Jen Sincero
Just as equally fabulous as her first one, but more focused on a money making mindset. A quick and easy read, and 100% worth the time and few bucks!
Girl Wash Your Face - Rachel Hollis
This one was a crowd pleaser this year. I liked how it was separated into chapters based on different lies women tell themselves. I will say, I was still coming off the high of You Are A Badass, so this one fell a little short for me but it is a great one for women, especially mothers or soon-to-be-mothers.
The Greatest Salesman in the World - OG Mandino
Short, sweet, and powerful; told in a story, not just talking at you. It’s not necessarily meant just for folks in sales. Each scroll (chapter) is meant to be read 3 times a day, once of these times out loud, for 30 days a piece. I didn’t do it like that, but I am sure it would be even more powerful if done that way.
Awaken The Giant Within - Tony Robbins
I am not finished with this one yet but I couldn’t not include it. Tony Robbins is just incredible. This book is long and heavy but there is SO MUCH valuable information. I’d recommend reading a chapter a day (or per week, whatever). It’s worth getting through!
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck - Mark Manson
Being a big fan of the F word, I was immediately attracted to this one. It’s very straightforward, no BS, and funny. It’s about learning what to give a f*ck about, and how to let go of the things that don’t truly matter. He tells a lot of his own personal stories, too, which I liked.
The Magic of Thinking Big - David J Schwartz
This one was recommended to me by my friend Kelly — thanks Kelly! I’m still reading it but I am loving it so far. The title is pretty self explanatory. A good one for those who do, or want to THINK BIG!
One of my favorite discoveries of 2018! Seriously a life-changing podcast, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone. She covers so many different topics and every single person could relate to 90% of her episodes. She is very straightforward, almost a little “tough love.” It’s like having your own personal life coach!! 12/10.
I started listening to random episodes some time over the summer, and in June-ish she went offline and started a new season a couple months later. I like her episodes prior to that best. She is a little “woo woo”, but I am very interested in the Law of Attraction (Abraham Hicks, “The Secret” etc) and lots of her episodes are about that. I don’t agree with everything she says and does but it’s definitely worth listening to the LOA episodes if you’re into stuff like that.
What I am Reading Next
This is like, the classic of all classics. And if Oprah recommends it— I’m in. I just started it the other day as an audiobook and I don’t know if I’d recommend it this way. I had to speed up the audio 1.25x because he talks soooo slow. But I am excited to get into this one!!
I will read his other book, The Power of Now next!!
