Detoxing My Charleston Home

In 2019 our world is pretty dang toxic. We are exposed to hundreds more chemicals than our ancestors were— from what we eat, drink, breathe, put on our bodies, etc. Unfortunately we can’t live in a bubble and escape all of it. But we can make better choices. I’ve taken it upon myself to make our home a healthier place for ourselves and for our future children. If it weren’t for me, my husband would still be eating Poptarts for breakfast and drinking from water bottles he left in his car in the heat of summer (CRINGE).

Over the past handful of years I’ve made a lot of changes but recently I’ve been inspired to really kick it into gear and do more. Because why not? When you know better, you do better.

….But what does DETOX really mean?

It’s such a buzzword lately.

Let’s teach ourselves a different way to think of detoxing.

Detoxing doesn’t necessarily mean taking a supplement, drinking a tea, or doing a juice cleanse for a week and POOF you’re fresh and detoxed. It certainly may help, but these methods only produce short term results. A truly impactful detox means eliminating day-to-day harmful toxins, and in turn replacing or adding the better-for-you options.

“The average woman uses 12 personal care products daily, exposing her to 168 unique chemicals per day. According to the EWG (Environmental Working Group), one of every 13 women are exposed to a known or suspected carcinogen, every day, while one out of every 23 men are.” And that’s just personal care products! That doesn’t include household and cleaning products or any of the food we put in our body, etc.

“The average home today contains 62 toxic chemicals - more than a chemistry lab at the turn of the century.”

Scary, huh? That’s why I’ve committed to making small changes along the way. They will no doubt add up and make a difference in the long run.

So where does one even start?

Follow me the next few weeks as I share the simple changes and switches I’m making in our household.

Stay tuned for Week No. 1.
